Cruel To Be Kind

I once did a presentation about this saying. A phrase coined from our immortal poet and playwright, William Shakespeare. It is so commonly used that I thought it was such a cool thing to say and to use and to find out about. When I looked deeper than just the physical words, I actually came to agree to this phrase. It is cruel to be kind. What does it mean?

It can be viewed in either two ways. One,  you need to be cruel in order to be kind. Two, you’re being cruel when you’re being kind. In the end, they both result in the same thing. Let’s explain the first viewpoint. This was used by Shakespeare in one of his writings.

I do repent; but heaven hath pleas’d it so
To punish me with this and this with me,
That I must be their scourge and minister.
I will bestow him, and will answer well
The death I gave him. So again good night.
I must be cruel only to be kind.
Thus bad begins and worse remains behind.

Hamlet Act 3, scene 4, 173–179.

Let me give you a summary of the explanations of these lines. It is said that these lines were addressed by Hamlet to his mother. The first five lines refer to Hamlet’s impulsive killing of a courtier called Polonius whom had been snooping around when Hamlet was talking to his mother. Hamlet justified his act by saying he was heaven’s “scourge and minister” to bring justice on the corrupt. At the same time, he repents on the killing and accepts the consequences to come. Polonius was punished by Hamlet and Hamlet will be punished for killing Polonius.

The next line saying, “I must be cruel only to be kind,” was shifting the focus on Hamlet’s mother whom was indulging in her new husband (whom is also her brother-in-law) of whom Hamlet thought was a very low specimen of slime because brother-in-law is a murderer of mother’s late husband. In this line he explains he needed to be cruel to his mother in order to be kind- to save her from going further into sensuality and betrayal of her late husband. (To read the original explanation, please click here)

The two explanations above shows Hamlet being kind (bringing justice on the corrupt and nagging his mother’s ear off because of her acts), but was seen as being cruel (his act of murder needed to be punished and his mother most probably does not appreciate of her son’s despise of her new husband).

I know this doesn’t belong here. It’s too cute.

The second viewpoint is one I believe most people experienced. It is when you’re being too kind, that you end up being cruel instead. Imagine this; your very own son or daughter does drugs and demands for money every once in a while to buy them. There are two ways this can end. One, you give the money to him or her and your child will be on their way to “happiness”. Two, if you don’t, they might throw a tantrum, flip tables, bang doors, perhaps even threaten you and walk out of the house swearing to never see you again. Your own child- hating you, never seeing you again. Would you in this situation, give the money? If you would give the money, thinking this would pass and there will be a time when he or she would go off drugs, you’re being too kind.

Maybe that example is a little too abstract for you. What about if someone close to you was self-destructive? Most times you meet, you hear of his or her sorrows of not being able to be successful at what they do when in actuality, the root of the problem is the person himself or herself. Perhaps why he cannot get a promotion while his other colleagues are getting it is not because the boss was being unfair, but because he’s not showing any progress. Or the reason why she’s always being unhappy in her relationship is not because of her, but her holding on to the wrong person. Or maybe you realise that he’s going to ruin his relationship with the love of his life by suffocating her too much with his obsessive love acts, but he doesn’t realise it. Yet, you keep quiet because you know, if you touch on these sensitive topics, they’d get hurt, defend themselves, start to turn away from you or you assume that they would not listen to you in the first place. Bottom line, it might not end up well and will ruin your relationship with him or her. You assume they would work it out themselves sooner or later.

By keeping quiet or giving hypothetical drug money to your hypothetical drug addict child, you’re being too kind. What if they never figure it out? What if they never get their head out of that castle of clouds they just built? True, you never did anything wrong to them. But you never did anything period. You just did a cruel act by letting them fall into their own self-made trap. Almost as if it’s Cruel Mercy. Hamlet could have just shut his mouth and let his mother fall further and further in her lustful love of her brother-in-law. It was because he cared that he took the chance to be seen as cruel to be kind to her.

Modernized Prince Hamlet.

I struggle with this constantly. Some people close to me are being self-destructive. Yet, I chose to keep quiet because I did not want to be seen as judgemental, did not want to have to deal with arguments, did not want to deal with them turning away. I was being too kind. Inside, I want to help, but I did not know how to help without being cruel. If I was being cruel (rude, harsh, insensitive), I never meant it to be. I only did it because I cared.

Never look down on anybody unless you're helping him up.

The Definition of Love?

I think most of us constantly find out ways to define what we think as love. We compare it to the movies, compare it to our parents, compare it to actions. But somehow we fail to grasp the true meaning of it and are never satisfied.

I came across this video and I think that it truly defines what we seek as 'love'. The one, true love. For the people whom I love and everyone out there, this is a wonderful song by Jaeson Ma.

Especially To You

First of all, I must warn readers, whoever is reading this post right now, that there is a long, corny post coming right up. If you are someone who can't stand mushy love pieces, you are very welcomed to skip this post. This post is entirely dedicated to one particular person (for a certain reason). And if you do decide to continue on reading, this post is going to be totally unrelated to anything except one. You have been warned.

You... Yew... (sound the same) I hope you read this from beginning 'til end. I'm sorry that I don't have any other special names to call you with besides 'Goat'. That sounds special but so unromantic. I'm tired of the special names like Honey, Baby, Dear, Darling, etc., they sound so common to me, thus no longer special. So Goat, I want to thank you.

Thank you for being here for me during when I had a bad break up. Thank you for helping me with SPM. Thank you for lending me your shoulder when my father passed away and comforting me when I spontaneously burst into tears on nice days. Thank you for loving me. I'm very grateful to have you.

The term "boyfriend" doesn't even fit the description I have for you. "Boyfriend" is when I have a guy to date me out, a status to say I'm in a relationship, a person whom I own because of that status, someone to call me up, someone to call me out, someone to fill my loneliness as well as spare time, but those just sound too lax. You're more than that. You're my best friend, my companion, my person to argue with; sometimes my support, sometimes my arch enemy, and you're someone I enjoy just being with, even if we argue like it's some heated parliamentary debate. I even enjoy the simple things I do with you, like watching you sleep!

I like growing with you through our relationship. Thinking back to the time when we first started, do you realise how much we have changed? Of course there's the good and bad. But I don't regret being in this relationship with you. Two years and I find it amazing. Amazed that I never get tired of hugging you. My heart still gives that happy nudge when your hand finds mine. The kisses we still have are sweet too. I don't know how is it for you, but this is how it is for me.

I don't love you... I don't love you because you're handsome (I really do think you are). The love is the same when you had that look in Form 4 and the same with the look you have now. I don't love you because of the cash you have with you or the presents you buy for me. The love is the same when you're broke and when you have extra. I don't love you because you can bring me to far places with your car. I'd still love you if we go out to date by walking and taking the bus.

I love you... I love you because you want to buy presents for me. I love you because you want to spend that extra cash on me. I love you because you want to bring me to far away places and you waste your petrol just because I complain Puchong is so dry and dull. Then we sometimes get into an argument because I was being greedy and wanted more. Or you were being insensitive and neglected me. But those are normal imperfections. Our hot temperedness, our stubborn-ness, our different perceptions made it unavoilable for conflict. I love you through your imperfections and your quirks. I love you because of that sweet heart of yours that beats and beats and beats....

And right at this moment now, I don't care if some psychology theory say we're the worst match for each other. I don't believe in forever, but I don't care that if we happen to last very long, our relationship could end up like my parents. Because I know that through understanding and tolerance, we could end up with a better relationship. I don't care that I'm being so freaking corny right now. Well, actually I do a little but...

Do you realise what date today is? It's been two years since you made that silly mistake.

Happy 1st Second Year Anniversary!

Emotionless

Love, why do you play these tricks on me? You gave me so much joy, yet you gave me equal pain. Love, do you enjoy torturing me and leaving me breathless? Always bringing me to the high cliff and leaving me there to decide what to do next? I can fall or I can just run away. If I fall, I might hurt myself. If I run away, I'll fail to experience that adrenaline rush.

So what do you want me to do? Why did you lead me here? To always, always decide what to do. I fell a few times just for you. And now you're doing it again. Leaving me at the ledge. Do you really think you're so special, Love? You're right. You are. People can't fully live without you. But why do you have to torment me so? People could die just because of you!

And I'm dying inside just bit by bit by your gleeful play. When I least expect you patch me back up, but only to watch me wilt again later on. It isn't fair. You're having all the fun.

So to fight you I came up with a conclusion. I must not feel. I must not feel joy, for I will feel pain. I must not feel you, for Hate will surely come and find me. I must be void. Void of you. So stop your childish games, Love.

I must be emotionless.

Incubus - Love Hurts

I kinda like Incubus. Particularly this song. =) Love hurts, sometimes it's a good hurt~

Love Hurts

Tonight we drink to youth
And holding fast to truth
(I don't want to lose what I had as a boy.)
My heart still has a beat
But love is now a feat.
(As common as a cold day in LA.)
Sometimes when I'm alone, I wonder
Is there a spell that I am under
Keeping me from seeing the real thing?

Love hurts...
But sometimes it's a good hurt
And it feels like I'm alive.
Love sings,
When it transcends the bad things.
Have a heart and try me,
'cause without love I won't survive.

I'm fettered and abused,
I stand naked and accused
(Should I surface this one man submarine?)
I only want the truth
So tonight we drink to youth!
(I'll never lose what I had as a boy.)
Sometimes when I'm alone I wonder
Is there a spell that I am under
Keeping me from seeing the real thing?

Love hurts...
But sometimes it's a good hurt
And it feels like I'm alive.
Love sings,
When it transcends the bad things.
Have a heart and try me,
'cause without love I won't survive.

Happy Second & First

To Someone Special...

I know sometimes I'm a pain in the a--,
I know sometimes I don't really care.
I know sometimes I think just bout me,
I know sometimes I made you angry.

I've thought a lot about what we are,
I've come to a conclusion we're quite far.
We're a pair, we're lovers, we'll forever be,
Though one day this just might not be.

Nothing's perfect I know it's true,
And all we ever did was argue (these past few weeks lah).
But through the storm we're still survivors,
Love is our one big reviver.

You've loved me, you've spoilt me, you've cherished me,
You made me so happy and all so bouncy.
Your sweet little words and your caring little actions,
Are ones I love best through our interactions.

After all these months we've come to this,
Even though we're in imperfect bliss.
A year passed on by and smiled at us,
So comes the "Happy Anniversary, my dearest!"

Yeah, lah, a little late. But still, I want to say I appreciate this whole year a lot. You know it, I know it. Thanks for all the sweet sacrifices and the debates (I had much fun, really!). Also, thanks for shaping me to become a better individual.

Me loves ya lots!!! Happy (2nd) 1st Year Anniversary, my little G!

P.S: I would write more sweet things here but I know you'll most probably say I've copied you and gag on the floor or worst of all, have diabetes!

Love Is...

Love is without boundaries.

Love is patient.

Love is kind.

Love is understanding.

Love is gentle.

Love is peaceful.

Love is generous.

Love is joy.

Love is not the fast beating of the heart, or sweaty palms. Love is not the desire to have of flesh against flesh. Love is never jealous, never angry nor sad. Love is... love is... what is love? Has anyone experienced true love? Perhaps.

But who (besides God) would love as purely as this?

Love And Obsession

This is a little something I came up with while praying in church (bad me, mind wondering while praying). It's not edited or checked to I hope it has very few errors. I might change it... when I feel like it. Haha. Other than that, enjoy. =)

For months I have gotten to know you and I slowly fell in love. My heart, which I kept so guarded, was taken away from its jail and landed up in your palms. But we were too young to start, we both knew it. So we danced around each other instead, randomly playing with each other's feelings. Yet we got closer. And one day I asked you out.

Our first date, something I will never forget. How can I when I loved you terribly so? I have been meaning to ask you to be mine for sometime. However, my fear overtook me and stopped me from doing so. And that day… that day I finally found courage to help me. You said you would think about it. My hope fell. Were you thinking of rejecting me? Why do you have to think if you love me so? For those few days, I was restless, silently praying for the best. I tried to study your actions but that only filled my head with more worries. Oh Samantha, the day you said yes I was so relieved! And I was overjoyed.

This love for you grew, Samantha. It grew and I did not care. Did not see where this would go, did not think about it. All I knew is that I was happy and I felt lucky having you. For years I have waited for you, Samantha. And I finally have you. The arguments that came, I did not pay much heed. After all, what kind of relationship does not have arguments or disagreements? I knew more about you, your talents, your fears, your thinking. I started thinking like you too. I started to be one with you. I did not know how this love would turn out, Samantha.

That day when we broke up over a stupid argument was the day that shattered me. It shattered us both. We did not even get a few things straight. You left with my heart and I was left with a head full of questions. My veins were then filled with anger and depression. Wasn't I good enough? Shouldn't I have done that? Perhaps I could have stopped the break up. Why did I only think about it when everything is over? And you even filled me with the hope that maybe we could get back together again. I was so ready for it. I waited for you like waiting for rain in the desert. My love for you was not broken yet.

Before I realised it, my love turned into obsession over you. You seemed to be doing better than me, Sam. I followed the news about you. I knew where you went, I read about your growing talents. How you became a model to how you were growing as a singer. Your pictures are amazing and your songs are great. I knew your talents would get you far someday. I was happy when you called to ask me how I was. Despite your busy schedule you did not fail to know about your old flame. At that time I couldn't help thinking, "Am I still your flame?"

Unfortunately you disappointed me again and again. I found that you had so many fans, so many suitors, and so many admirers. What am I compared to them? When I needed you, you weren't there. You were busy with your work; practically married to it. And like a foolish man waiting for water to fall from the sky in the desert instead of looking for it, I was slowly dying of thirst.

One day I finally decided I can't do this to myself any longer. I tried to break my habit; my obsession with you. And like a blind man who had just gotten new eyes, I slowly adjusted to my surroundings; my life without you, without being blinded anymore. No doubt, I still look forward to hearing your voice, to seeing your face, to have you smile at me, but I began to let those go, one by one. Obsession is a hard thing to get over.

Then I met her. She makes me smile again, Sam. I'm even laughing for real! You can't imagine how free I feel, released from your binding chains. It feels like I have been underwater for too long and am now taking my first breath of fresh air. She is nothing like you. Not as pretty as you, but I find her beautiful. Not as talented as you, but I can see something growing.

"Come out and spend time with me, Jake."

Why do you want to patch things up now? Of course I don't feel for her what I felt for you. Not yet anyway. Don't look at me that way, Sam. I am happy now and I am cured off my blindness. Or so I think. There will always be this small space for you in my heart. But other than that, I am moving on. Would a blind man go back to being blind again, Sam?

I am running ahead in this race and I wish you well.

Love

Love is blind. Many fell in love and got blinded in the process. Teenagers with lots of raging hormones might mistaken lust and infatuation for love. They aren't the only ones, though. Adults too would mistake other feelings of attraction for love.

Some teens would go around in their school thinking that there is only one who is better than the rest and that there's only one in this world like their person. True, he/she could be the only one in this world like him/her. Afterall, each person is unique. But when they get out of their little high school world, they'll find that there are many people way better and attractively unique compared to their supposedly 'only one'. Adults could be blinded in a sense that they fail to notice the many flaws of their partner. That is until after marriage, of course. After the 'I do's', their eyes would start to open and the first thing that comes of mind when the light hits their eyes is, "I married this person??"

Really, love IS blind. So what excactly is love? According to scientists, love is chemistry. The feeling itself involves a number of hormones such as oxytocin, vasopressin, endorphin and some others. They are called bonding chemicals, as in bonding of humans. Chemistry changes our emotions, personality or temperament. Maybe that is why many of us are blinded by love? Because of the changing hormones and chemicals that run through our veins?

However, I view love differently. I believe love has got to be more than just chemistry. It comes from the soul. The soul lives on it, feeds on it. Chemistry burns out sooner or later. Think of those successful marriages. Surely the chemistry must have burnt out after years and years of facing each other. But why a successful marriage? Love, of course! Love doesn't mean you have to feel an attraction or lust for the person of admiration. And loving someone doesn't mean that the person is P-E-R-F-E-C-T. Love, maybe is, coming to know of all the flaws of 'the one', yet still continuing to, well, love. Just like what God did and is still doing.

As a teen, you might have felt resentment against your parents for setting too many rules, right? You hate the way they scold you, limit you, and you would certaintly hate that they don't trust you at a point. But once they're in trouble or suffering from illness, you would surely feel that little pang of panic, feel that crease over your eye brows as you start to worry... You love your parents enough that you care for them, worry for them, achieve for them. Hates and dislikes certaintly don't 'bond'. No chemistry there.

So my conclusion; chemistry isn't love or vice versa. Loving even though there are many flaws and things that don't agree with you, that's love. But who am I to say, right? I'm just a kid. And this is just my theory.
